MADRID, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Atletico Madrid on Wednesday confirmed the signing of Portuguese striker Joao Felix from Benfica for 126 million euros (143 million US dollars).
The news comes six days after Benfica released a statement to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission informing that Atletico had "submitted a proposal for the acquisition of the sporting rights of the player Joao Felix for a total amount of 126 million euros."
That means Atletico have actually agreed a fee that is higher than the 120 million buyout clause Benfica had placed on Joao Felix's contract, but paying a slightly higher price means that Spanish club can make the payment in installments rather than all at the same time.
The 19-year-old Felix, who is not yet a full international for his country, burst onto the scene last season, scoring 15 goals in 26 league matches for Benfica.
The youngster will help replace Antoine Griezmann, who said earlier in the summer he would leave Atletico once the buyout clause on his contract falls from 200 to 120 million euros on July 1.
Felix is not the only signing confirmed by Atletico on Wednesday with the club also signing 29-year-old Mexican midfielder Hector Herrera arriving on a free transfer from Porto.
Herrera has signed a three-year deal and his arrival will help compensate for the departure of Spain international Rodrigo Hernandez, who will join Manchester City after the Premier League champions paid his 70 million euro buyout clause on Thursday morning.
