ISLAMABAD, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A suicide attack attempt on a mosque was foiled on Friday when a suicide bomber was shot dead in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, officials said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Rizwan said that the suicide bomber successfully entered a mosque in Bara Kahu area of Islamabad but failed to explode his jacket before being gunned down by a security guard.
Eyewitness said that the suicide attacker pulled out his pistol and started firing after reaching near the mosque and then killed a security guard posted at the main entrance before entering the main courtyard of the worship area.
At least three more security guards intercepted the attacker but got wounded as the attacker fired at them.
Another security guard took his position and fire at the leg of the bomber. After getting wounded the assailant tried to explode his bomb vest but failed before being shot dead by the guard.
The Bomb Disposal Squad defused the jacket, saying that around six kilograms of explosives and ball bearings were used in the bomb vest.
The incident took place when Islamabad was on high alert with the deployment of hundreds of police personnel as the local people celebrating the religious festival of Eid-ul-Fitar.
Earlier in the day, at least 10 people were killed and 26 others injured when some militants opened fire at worshippers coming out of a mosque after offering Eid prayer in Pakistan's southwestern provincial capital of Quetta.
