BUCHAREST, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Romania's main opposition the National Liberal Party (PNL) in its Congress on Saturday elected Interim Chairman Klaus Iohannis Chairman of the party.
Iohannis received 1,334 votes out of 1,479 valid, defeating Ioan Ghise, his only rival for the party's chairmanship.
"It is an overwhelming vote. This result is very touching to me," Iohannis told the congress, after the election.
In his motion as candidate to the party chairmanship, Iohannis said that the Liberals' objective is winning the presidential elections in November and coming back at rule.

Iohannis' political program also provides that PNL fundamentally opposes the left wing and, in the current political context, on short-term, collaboration with the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) is ruled out. At the same time, the governments PNL wants to create do not have in view a coalition with PSD.
The delegates to the Congress also voted by wide majority the fusion of the party with the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL).
According to Iohannis, the PDL accepted that the party that would result following the fusion between the two groups be called the National Liberal Party.
