DAMASCUS, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Some 50 fighters of the Islamic State (IS) group were killed on Saturday by Syrian airstrikes against a training camp in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, the pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV reported.
The Syrian air force targeted a training camp used by the IS fighters in the town of Tabanni in the western countryside of Deir al-Zour, the report said, spelling no further details.
The air force also carried out several airstrikes against IS positions in Deir al-Zour and the northern province of al-Raqqa, both of which have been largely fallen to the IS fighters over the pan of the long-running conflict in Syria.
The Islamic State, previously known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, has recently proclaimed to establish an " Islamic Caliphate" in parts of Syria and Iraq, threatening the political geography in the region.
The group, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi who is said to be commanding over 30,000 fighters, claimed its goal is to establish an Islamic state in Iraq and Syria and expand it into other Arab countries.
