SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Indian military Thursday said it has killed three infiltrators in a gunfight near Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir.

The gunfight, according to Indian military, broke out in frontier Poonch district, about 185 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"The alert troops of Indian army foiled an infiltration bid in Poonch sector today at approximately 5:00 p.m. (local time) killing three heavily armed militants in a gun battle," a military spokesman said. "The infiltration bid was detected by surveillance devices and alert troops."

According to military officials, the militants were trying to make an attempt to infiltrate deep into Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Indian military has not suffered any damage in the stand-off, the spokesman said.

However, no independent confirmation could be made about the gunfight, owing to remoteness of the area.

"The failed infiltration bid and causalities are a big blow to nefarious designs of militants and their handlers across the LoC, who have been waiting and planning for infiltration for a long time," the spokesman said.

LoC is a de facto border that divides Kashmir into India and Pakistan controlled parts.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
