HAVANA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- A passenger bus turned over Wednesday in eastern Cuba with an initial result of four dead and 34 injured, state media highlighted.
Dr. Luis Pina, chief of surgery at the Provincial Hospital Saturnino Lora, reported that of the injured, four remain in serious condition and have received surgery.
According to police lieutenant Yoandri Rodriguez from the Provincial Road Safety Unit, the vehicle was travelling from the central city of Cienfuegos to Santiago de Cuba and suffered the crash at 5:45 a.m. local time near the town of Boniato.
Rodriguez stressed that the area where the accident occurred is known for being dangerous, with a perilous slope and several sharp turns requiring attentive drivers.
The precise cause is under investigation, the authorities said.
Traffic accidents are considered as the fifth-largest cause of death in Cuba with a fatality of six victims per 100,000 people. In 2015, 615 people died in road accidents, 22 more than 2014.
